The Most Famous Doubter “I Have My Doubts”
Luke 6:12-16, ”One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also designated apostles: 14 Simon (whom He named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.”
- Remember, Thomas was ___________________ by Jesus.
- Thomas was fiercely _______________________ to Jesus. John 11:7-8, 16, ”And then He said to His disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judea.’ 8 ’But Rabbi,’ they said, ‘a short while ago the Jews there tried to stone You, and yet You are going back?’… 16 Then Thomas (also known as Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with Him.’”
- Thomas asked a lot of questions, but the purpose of his questions was: ________________________________________.
John 14:1-9, “’Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in Me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with Me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.’ 5 Thomas said to Him, ‘Lord, we don’t know where You are going, so how can we know the way?’ 6 Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. 7 If you really know Me, you will know My Father as well. From now on, you do know Him and have seen Him.’ 8 Philip said, ‘Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.’ 9
- Thomas was thinking what everybody else was thinking: “No God could be ____________ and ____________________.”
John 20:24-29, ”Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord!’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in His hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.’ 26 A week later His disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ 27 Then He said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.’ 28 Thomas said to Him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29 Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen Me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’”
- Jesus wasn’t mad at Thomas, just disappointed that Thomas _______________________________.

Where Do They Come From? “I Have My Doubts.
Jude 1:22, ”Be merciful to those who doubt.”
Doubt from…
- _________________________. Revelation 2:4-5, ”Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. 5 Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”
- A faulty view of _________________. Psalm 46:10, “He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.’”
- Weak _________________. 1 Peter 3:15, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.”
- Lack of ___________________. See Joshua 24:14-24
- Lack of _____________________. John 15:4-6, “Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in Me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.”
- Unruly ________________.
- Fearing to _______________. Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Misconceptions About… “I Have My Doubts
- Doubt is wrong because it’s _________________________.
Matthew14:31; 21:21, ”Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ He said, ‘why did you doubt?’… 21 Jesus replied, ‘Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, “Go, throw yourself into the sea,” and it will be done.’”
James 1:5-8, ”If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6 But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”
Matthew 28:16-17, ”Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted

Who is Jesus?
Mark 8:27-29, ”Jesus and His disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way He asked them, ‘Who do people say I am?’ 28 They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.’ 29 ’But what about you?’ He asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’”
- The word “Christ” or “Messiah” means: _____________.
Exodus 3:14, ”God said to Moses, ‘I AM who I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: I AM has sent me to you.’”
John 8:53-54, 56-59, ”’Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do You think You are?’ 54 Jesus replied, ‘If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the One who glorifies Me… 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing My day; he saw it and was glad.’ 57 ’You are not yet fifty years old,’ they said to Him, ‘and you have seen Abraham!’ 58 ’Very truly I tell you,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I AM!’ 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus hid Himself, slipping away from the temple grounds…”
John 10:36, “…’I am God’s Son.’”
See Mark 14:61-62; John 14:6,9
- Four Options with Jesus:
1 Corinthians 15:13-15, 20, ”If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead. But He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised… 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”
- People will die for what they ___________________ to be true even though it may be false. But people don’t have the tendency to die for what they ____________________ is a lie.

SAINT “What Does the Bible Say About You?”
- You are declared a “saint” ______________________.
Ephesians 1:1,18; 2:19; 3:8; 4:11-12; 6:18, “Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus…To the saints in Ephesus… I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His saints…. Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with the saints… Although I am less than the least of the saints…. It was He who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets… to prepare the saints for works of service… Keep on praying for all the saints.”
- The word “saint” means: “those who are ________________.”
- The voice of Satan is ___________. His verdict is _________. Results: you are _______________.
- The voice of God is ____________. His verdict is _________. Results: you are _______________.
- You are being developed into a “saint” _________________.
Ezekiel 36:26, ”I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
- You don’t just ________________ to be a saint; you’re to _______________ to be a saint.
Luke 6:40, ”The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.”
1 Corinthians 9:24-25, ”Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”

Daddy
Paul Vitz, Faith of the Fatherless: the Psychology of Atheism. Dallas: Spence Pub.,1999.
1. The heartbreak of an earthly father can __________ some people away from God as Heavenly Father.
John 1:12, “Yet to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.”
Also see 2 Corinthians 6:18 and Galatians 3:26
2. No matter how we might view ourselves, God sees us as the child He ________________________in order to love and He’s ________________________.
See Luke 3:22 and 1John 3:1
Matthew 6:9-13, “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name, 10 Your Kingdom come,
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one, for Yours is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”
3. Why was Jesus’ opening so startling? It’s because He used the Aramiac word ___________ meaning ___________.
Romans 8:14-15, ”For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to Sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’”

A Sinner of Need of a Savior “What the Bible Says About You”
Romans 3:23, ”For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
- The word used by Paul here literally means ______________ ________________.
- We water down the word “sinner” by…
See Psalm 51:1-4, 16-17
Romans 6:23, ”For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
- According to the Bible, there are two kinds of death:
Matthew 13:42, ”They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Romans 10:9,13, ”If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved… 13 for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
- To accept the gift there must be an open declaration — a ___________________________.
James 2:19-20, ”Do I hear you professing to believe in the one and only God, but then observe you complacently sitting back as if you had done something wonderful? That’s just great. Demons do that, but what good does it do them? Use your heads!…
Do you suppose for a minute that you can cut faith and works in two and not end up with a corpse on your hands?”
Romans 6:2-4, ”By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

James 5:12 — The End of Maybe “James”
James 5:12, ”Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’ Otherwise you will be condemned.”
- James is talking about the foolishness of __________________________.
Luke 22:33-34, ”But he replied, ‘Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.’ 34 Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know Me.’”
- James also wants to press home the importance of _________________________.
- James points out the danger of the word: ___________.
See Mark 1:15; Luke 9:62; 12:57-59; John 12:47-48
- Jesus didn’t think that ___________ was an acceptable response to anything related to Him.
Moving Beyond Maybe: The Joshua Challenge
“Shechem” was the place where almost every major decision, every major commitment, had been made in their history… It’s where Abraham received his first promise from God regarding Canaan; …Jacob committed himself to God; …Joseph was buried; …Kings of Israel would go to be crowned.
See Joshua 24:14-24
