While You’re in a Mess
  “It’s Our Hope”

Acts 12:17, “Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet and described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. “Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this,” he said, and then he left for another place.”

1. The one thing these 1st Century Christians would not do. They would not sacrifice to or acknowledge the _____________________.

Tertullian of Carthage (living around  AD 155 to 220): “If the Tiber rises too high or the Nile is too low the remedy is always feeding Christians to the lions.”

2. When something went wrong locally or empire-wide, clearly the ___________ were upset and the best way to appease the __________ was to eliminate Christians.

1 Peter 1:6-9, “In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

Matthew 5:14,16, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… 16In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

1 Peter 4:1,8-10, “1Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

3. Peter’s point: __________ will divide you; _________ will unite you.

4. These early Christians did not die for what they believed. They died because they __________________ on what they believed.

1 Peter 1:3-4  Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,
