Sermon Notes October 3, 2021

Punishments

“It’s a Bloody Mess”

Leviticus 20:9, “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head.”

See Leviticus 24:10-14; Numbers 15:32-36; and                 Deuteronomy 21:18-21

1. There are a lot of laws with punishments for the simple reason — God  was ___________________________.

2. You don’t punish for childish irresponsibility, but you do punish  for __________________________________.

3. All of the Old Testament ______________________ to us today, but none of it applies apart from it’s                _____________________________ in Christ.

Exodus 21:23-25, “But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.”

Matthew 5:38-39, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also.”

See Exodus 21:28-30; 1Timothy 2:3-6; Hebrews 9:13-15; and, Mark 10:45

4. Throughout the Old Testament, there was the idea of _____________________________________________.

Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
