Hypocrisy

“What About ?”

  1. The word “hypocrite” literally means ________________.

Matthew 7:3-5, “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Matthew 23:5,25, ”Everything they do is done for men to see… 25 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.”

Matthew 23:14,27-28, “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them… 27 Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

  1. Those who authentically follow Jesus are marked by an honest   ____________________________, not controlled appearance.

Matthew 23:6, “They love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues.”

1 John 1:8, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”

  1. The second mark of authentic spirituality is being

     _________________________.

“Christians are not cured of all sin and imperfection, but in becoming Christians they have clearly entered the hospital for treatment.”

1 Timothy 1:15-16, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life.”

Abortion and IVF

“What About…?”

  1. The word “in vitro” is Latin for ________________.

(1) The Germinal Stage (first 3 weeks)

  • Conception (sperm & egg)
  • Zygote (journeys to uterus)
  • Zygote (turns into a blastocyst)
  • Blastocyst attaches to uterus

(2) The Embryonic Stage (weeks 3-8)

  • Blastocyst becomes an embryo
  • Structures and organs begin to form

(3) The Fetal Stage (week 9-birth)

  • Organs and body systems grow and mature

(4) Viability (at around 24 weeks)

  • Brain maturation

                   Consider Psalm 139

  1. “Exegesis” is letting the text ___________________.
  2. “Eisegesis” is when you read something into it  ___________________________________.

Exodus 21:22-25 (NIV) 22 “If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely [she has a miscarriage] but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman’s husband demands and the court allows. 23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.”

  What We Can Agree On

(1) All humans are made _____________________.

(2) The sanctity of ____________________________.

      (3) The rejection of _______________ that would show disdain for that sanctity, the beauty of procreation, or God’s vision for sexuality and marriage.

     (4) The rejection of ___________________________.

     (5)  Saving a mother’s life.

The Most Unique Thing           “Fighting the Good Fight”

Acts 15:36-40, “Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, ‘Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing.’ 37 Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, 38 but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. 39 They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.”

2 Timothy 4:11, “Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.”

  1. Simplest definition : Grace is _____________________ something we did not _____________________.

    2. Grace realizes that people are _________________ in every conceivable way, and that’s by God’s design.

     3. Grace flows when you realize we are all _______________.

     4. Grace, by its very definition, is something that is to be applied directly to sin. And not just the sins we’ve committed, but the sins others _____________________________________.

Matthew 6:12, 14-15, “And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors… 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Staying Faithful in an Unfaithful World                              “Fighting the Good Fight”

See: 2 Timothy 3:1-5 and 3:14-17

2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

  1. The idea of inspiration is that God used people to write the books of the Bible, but He was so involved in the process that they wrote_______________________________________.

2 Peter 1:20-21  Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

  1. “Cosmic Exception Clause” — Somehow you don’t have __________ what the Bible says to your life the way it says you should.

1 John 2:4-6 Whoever says, “I know Him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did.

  1. “Food Bar Approach” — You pick and choose what you’re going to put on your plate ______________________.
  2. The “Compromise Game” — You ______ what it clearly does; or you _______ that what it says has any authority over your life.

Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Finishing Well                                                                “Fighting the Good Fight”

  1. So when is :finishing well” most tested?
  2.   a) You can be severely tested to deviate from a life that “finishes well” is __________________________________________.
      b) You can veer away from what it takes to “finish well” when you’re                    _________________________________________.

2 Timothy 2:3-7,15, “Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer. Similarly, anyone who competes as an athlete does not receive the victor’s crown except by competing according to the rules. The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops. Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this… 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

  1. As a soldier…
a) ___________ is a given and therefore, must be ___________.
b) Timothy must remember that he is in service to a __________
————— and therefore, he needs to be ______________

_____________in terms of duty and service.

3. As an athlete, the athlete had to compete according to the rules and had to swear an oath that he had been in ________________________ for at least 10 months prior to the competition.

4.To be like Jesus you don’t __________, you _____________.

Luke 6:40, “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.”

1 Timothy 4:7, “Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.”

  1. Making a difference with our lives, fulfilling God’s dream for our lives, means ________________________ and getting to it.

You and communion

Daily rituals can make life easier. Having a routine for getting ready for work every morning, for instance, can help us start each day happier and more efficiently. But, we have to be careful that we don’t allow important matters, especially spiritual matters, to become ritualistic. This runs the risk of becoming mechanistic and robotic. Sometimes it’s extremely important that we be thoughtful and introspective. Taking communion is one such time.

Ask yourself what you are thinking about when you take communion. Are you simply consuming the emblems without thinking about what they represent? Are you taking communion in a way that respects the Bible’s instructions on how to do so?

Partaking of the Lord’s Supper is probably the most important part of our service. When done correctly, it can re-center us on Christ for the week ahead.

1 Corinthians 11:27-28 (NIV)

27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.

Prior to taking communion, we are told to examine ourselves. It’s a time to reflect on our relationship with Christ. It’s a time to reflect on our sin and seek forgiveness. It’s a time to reflect on how we can improve our Christian walk.

Partaking of the Lord’s Supper is a serious matter. Were it not, there would be no instructions in the Bible on how to participate in this memorial. We should take care to not let it become “ordinary” or “robotic.” We should engage ourselves, heart, soul, mind and body every time we partake.
